Male gaze in Jason Derulo - Swalla

JASON DERULO ( feat. Nicki Minaj & Ty Dolla $ign) -  SWALLA

In this music video Jason Derulo is surrounded by many female dancers. He is the only male that appears in the video. The way the females are dancing around Jason Derulo in a very graphic way. The females in the video are very confident with their body's and they dance very sexually. This suggests that the intended message of this song was to put across very sexual thoughts. whilst Jason Derulo is singing and dancing he is breaking fourth wall. He is looking directly at the audience in a very devious way.

The relationship between the singers and the audience is that the audience would be very shocked or interested in the behaviour going on in the video. The dancers are wearing hardly any clothing and dancing around sexually and the singers are doing random acts very carelessly.
The setting of the video is in a room full of water and candy. The women dancers are messing around on the floor and also eating candy. The way the women are eating the         candy presents very sexual images.

From a male gaze perspective the way the women are presented is very explicit. The costumes of the girls are very revealing and the women are showing off many features that most women wouldn't. The women in this video seem very vulnerable as Jason is presented as a dominant male in the video as he dancing with them like he is forcing them to dance with him. During a section of this video Jason has his top off and is dancing against women. These actions are very intimate and Jason is shown as very powerful against these women.

However when Nicki comes on screen she is sat on a chair blindfolded on her own. She does not have any dancers which implies to the audience the question of why did Jason have female dancers and Nicki doesn't. This may have been done as in the eyes of a male audience Jason would not be able to present his self very sexually if he was on his own compared to if he was with dancers however when Nicki is on her own she can be very sexual and can attract the audiences attention all on her own. Nicki also is wearing very revealing clothing which also catches attention. Nicki is very seductive with her body language and her actions. Nicki is blind folded therefore she can not make eye contact with the audience therefore she makes up for it using her body. Throughout the whole video all the dance movements are very associated with sexual physical activity.  Also because she is blind folded the audience does not focus on her eyes as Nicki is not breaking fourth wall they focus on her body.

From the perspective of  a female audience the females may look at the women in the video and wish to act and look like them. The women in the video are very confident with their own body's and females in the audience may want to copy their movements and actions. This shows how media may be influencing females decision when it comes to their behaviour and body image. A younger generation of females may watch this video and feel like its acceptable to be touched the way Jason is touching all these women and they may not get told that its not acceptable when growing up as they are surrounded by many similar videos in the media to this day. The females in the audience may also think that they have to dress and act this way to get a males attention  when that is not the case at all. They also may think that to look confident and powerful they have to act like the women in this music video.

  1. Good discussion of the underlying message of this video. You could consider how this seems to be a parody of the sex industry and you do touch on the male gaze here. Why have you chosen to analyse this particular video. How will it help you with your own planning?
