A comparison of two national newspapers (The Guardian and The Daily Mail)

THE GUARDIAN & THE DAILY MAIL
The main difference between the Guardian and The Daily Mail is that The Guardian uses the Broadsheet layout and the Daily Mail is a tabloid layout. A similarity to each paper is that they both have a big masthead that stands out. Each cover is equally as attractive in my opinion and one title doesn't stand out more than the other. however on the Daily Mail the photo of the couple is more appealing as the story on this newspaper may appeal to someone who is more into soft news. The Guardian is presented as hard news however The Daily Mail is presented as soft news. The Daily Mail has more stories based on peoples life which would appeal more to people who are interested in reading the genre lifestyle. The Guardian has a lot more writing on the cover page compared to the daily mail which suggests The Guardian is written in more detail leading to The guardian being hard news. The Daily Mail also uses more colour on the cover page which to some people may be more attractive and that would lead them to selecting that paper to buy. This would improve the newspapers popularity.

As mentioned before The guardian has a lot more writing on it which also may be a reason for the Daily Mail being more appealing as The Guardian may have to much writing on the cover page for their personal liking. The daily mail also uses bolder colours which would allow it to stand out more next
to other newspapers such as The Guardian. The mixture of the colours green yellow and red are all bright colours and complement the cover page very well. This would attract a larger audience. The stories presented on each cover page are very different. The Daily Mail has used very informal language to present their stories. For example the word 'idiot' is very informal to put on a cover page. However the language used to present the stories on The Guardians cover page have used more formal language. From an audiences perspective the paper which is suited more to their style of language would be the paper they selected. Also reading a paper such as The Guardian which uses formal language may improve the audiences own vocabulary. The Guardian also talks about events happening around us which would improve the audiences knowledge on what's happening around them in the world. This paper would attract and audience of people who are looking to improve their general knowledge. On

The Daily mail at the top of the paper in the plugs it mentions 'free inside today' they use this to attract people to buy the paper. However The Guardian doesn't have anything like that in the plugs. This suggests that The Daily Mail may make a larger profit due to their selling tactics. In the plugs of The Daily Mail it also mentions 'The football magazine everyone's talking about.' This is another persuasive tactic that The Daily Mail has used that The Guardian hasn't. The way The Daily Mail have used the phrase 'everyone's talking about' automatically grabs attention as the audience would feel obliged to read about what 'everyone's talking about.' They may feel excluded if they did not.
